Managing Construction Documents
General
The last tab on the Development & Construction area is Documents. This displays folders for Topographical files and Construction files.
All files can be downloaded onto your device's hard drive by clicking the download button in the upper right corner.
The construction files displayed typically would be ECW files and align with the event date in the map view.
Why ECW files?
When working with large orthomosaics in AutoCAD, ECWs (Enhanced Compressed Wavelet) can offer several advantages over JPGs:
- File size: ECWs are efficiently compressed in a way specifically designed for geospatial imagery. Using this file type can significantly reduce the file size of orthomosiacs whilst maintaining visual quality. This reduces the client’s storage and system requirements to open the Topography file.
- World File: ECWs are also exported with world files that contain georeferencing information including the coordinate reference system and projection. This allows us to quickly geolocate the images in both AutoCAD and GIS.
- AutoCAD Access and Visualisation: AutoCAD handles ECWs more efficiently that JPGs due to their compression method, similar to map tiles (data stored at multiple resolutions corresponding to zoom levels). This should enhance the client experience when using the topography file and improve the speeds that we can open and work on linework files internally.
Importing ECWs into AutoCAD
The GeoRefImg plugin for AutoCAD not only allows us to import ECWs without needing AutoCAD Civil, but can geolocate the images much faster than previously.
- Download the GeoRefImg Plugin from the AutoCAD store at https://apps.autodesk.com/MEP/en/Detail/Index?id=7718964543906860174&appLang=en&os=Win32_64
- Once the ECW or JPG file is exported, it can be imported into the desired AutoCAD file using the IMAGEATTACH command, or by clicking the attach image button on the GeoRefImg Panel in the Add-ins tab. Note that you can add more than one image at a time using the plugin, but it may take some time.

- The image will be imported into AutoCAD at coordinates 0,0. Once all the desired images are imported and selected, press the GeoRefImg button and the image will be translated to the correct position using the coordinate system data from the world file.
